MOVE IT 2016 – Case Study

The UK’s largest dance event, MOVE IT, took place for the first time at London ExCel this year. The move to a new venue meant that we had to balance new production features whilst maintaining the familiar favourites that have made the long-running event so popular. We provided full technical production support, including an experiential entrance tunnel and rigging for aerial performers.

The trim height and ceiling points in ExCel provided the opportunity for aerial dancers performing on suspended trapezes. The MOVE IT production team integrated them seamlessly into the Main Stage programme by taking care to ensure the appropriate rigging, safety arrangements and lighting were in place.

Further challenges were presented by the acoustics of the new venue and previous formats were adapted accordingly. The Showcase Theatre stage has traditionally catered for quieter performances in a separate room, isolated from the other stages. We worked with stage & theatre curtain specialists J&C Joel to create an acoustically dampened space within the main hall of ExCel.

A film crew from ITV’s early morning show ‘Lorraine’ during the build phase meant co-ordinating all works to ensure the appropriate conditions for live broadcast.
