OneBigStar provided full technical production support to MOVE IT, the UK’s largest dance event, and new sister event MOVE FIT, co-located and focussing on fitness. This was the second successive year for MOVE IT at ExCel London and the fourth year with OneBigStar’s production.
MOVE IT featured 24,500 dancers over three days with performances, classes, career advice, celebrities, interviews and shopping. This year’s Main Stage included a custom LED video wall and a pair of IMAG screens, comprising 90no. Absen A3 Pro panels and 156no. Chauvet PVP7 panels respectively. For the all new Competition Stage, we utilised the latest LED fixtures from Chauvet Lighting including Maverick MK2 Spots and Washes and Ovation ERS-style LED fixtures. Further feature areas included a 47m Entrance Tunnel with custom graphics and dynamic lighting, the Freestyle Stage, the Showcase theatre and eight dance studios.
MOVE FIT was a huge success, bringing together over 100 new and exciting classes and workshops, ranging from high energy HIIT to weight based exercise to holistic laughter yoga. We provided a custom LED video screen with further 5mm pixel pitch panels for Main Stage and 3.9mm panels for Dance Fit stage.
OneBigStar gave creative input, technical liaison and support to improve the overall technical delivery of the show, with some excellent feedback from organisers and the operations team.
Challenges and Achievements
The biggest single challenge for our operations team was a tight schedule for both build and break, in line with the requirements of the tenancy at ExCel. This was further complicated by the fact that MOVE IT and MOVE FIT were held in different halls on sides of the site. Logistics were paramount, with six full-loaded articulated lorries delivering:
With ambient noise levels over 80dB in MOVE IT’s main hall, our audio team deployed boundary mics and lapel mics in combination on Main Stage to capture tap dancers and other percussive performers. The new MOVE FIT zone also demanded that we make extensive use of Black Wool Serge drapes to dampen noise spill from the busiest participation areas.
Key Feature Areas
MOVE IT’s 15m x 14m main stage featured a flown line array PA system by Electro-Voice and a 7.5m x 4m 7mm pitch LED screen by Chauvet plus 2no. flown LED screens 4.5m x 2.5m using Absen 3.9mm for IMAG camera playback. A Teradek Bolt 2000 kit was used to deliver a live relay from third party roving cameras. We supplied lighting to accommodate a broad range of acts, covered by Robe and Chauvet moving head fixtures plus LED washes, bars and blinders. Performances included Flawless, Kristina Rihanoff (Strictly Come Dancing) and Lord of The Dance representing Michael Flatley Dance Academy.
Freestyle Stage included Pioneer DJ equipment and a pre-programmed lighting console controlling dynamic lighting by a combination of LED wash and moving head fixtures. Flown tension fabric graphics were used to highlight the location of this key central feature.

Theatrical lighting was provided to accommodate a broad range of acts from some of the best dance schools, colleges and educational establishments in the UK.
The Competition Stage was a new addition for 2017 and similar to the Showcase Theatre with an additional 5m x 3m platform plus desk for 3 judges. We deployed exclusively Chauvet LED fixtures, including Maverick Mk2 Spots and Washes to achieve exciting dynamic lighting effects along with the Ovation range of ERS-style LED fixtures.
The Entrance Tunnel was the largest single area at 47m x 7m, spanned by a truss grid supporting lighting, PA, graphics, giant 1m mirror balls, voiles and drapes.
MOVE FIT included the popular Insta Stage seminar theatre, with AV for motivational guest speakers to address seated crowds and a giant 33m2 full-colour printed graphic wall.
