MOVE IT & PERFORM 2015 – Case Study

Summary

We provided full technical production support to MOVE IT, the UK’s largest dance event, and co-located show PERFORM at London’s Olympia. Celebrating 10 years of MOVE IT, organiser Upper Street Events wanted to deliver the best edition yet and we helped to raise the bar with first-class sound, lighting, video and staging. Our team pulled out all the stops and worked within a tight 24hr build window, the first occasion this has been permitted by the venue.

Key Feature Areas

Integral to the delivery of the Main Stage was a large screen that showcased performances from Britain’s Got Talent, Got to Dance and Strictly Come Dancing acts including Lukas McFarlane, Flawless, Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor, Twist and Pulse and Duplic8.

Brand new Green Hippo Karst media servers running V4 software ensured smooth and seamless video for the whole event and were thoroughly enjoyable to work with during the most dynamic performances.

The Yamaha desk, combined with Dugan auto-mixing expansion and Dante software, proved to be invaluable when setting up boundary mics to capture live tap dance and percussion.

The Philips SL Nitro 510Cs also made a lasting impression on their debut deployment.

Challenges

In the centre of the Grand Hall and open on all 4 sides, the Freestyle stage was built beneath a giant rigging cube decorated with vinyl graphics. Regular host Hakeem Onibudo helps to make this a popular feature with his animated and inviting style. Our challenge was to provide tightly focussed sound and lighting for an intense and electrifying atmosphere, without detracting from the Main Stage.

Focussing on fitness dance within the Grand Hall, this lively stage was positioned close the entrance. Truss and Tension Fabric graphics were used to provide a partially secluded entrance. A custom LED screen provided the teachers with the opportunity to illustrate their classes and helped make this an eye-catching area.

OneBigStar also supplied sister show PERFORM with production, including central stage The Space and three breakout classrooms. We worked together with J&C Joel Ltd who provided drapes to give a traditional theatre-style finish

Achievements

Both Upper Street Events and external operations contractor, Ops Squad, were delighted with the service they received from OneBigStar.

Shirry Liram, event director said: “Thank you for your hard work during the weekend and in the period coming up to it. No doubt we’ll speak soon about more ‘technical’ stuff but, as I said, this is just to say that I really enjoyed working with you and appreciate your hard work.”

Anna Anson of Op Squad added: “Thanks for doing such an amazing job on MOVE IT + PERFORM and being such a pleasure to work with – it certainly makes our life easier knowing how much support we have from you.”
