We provided full technical production for the inaugural edition of New Scientist Live, at London’s ExCel. Our team supplied video, sound, lighting and staging for four theatres plus main stage at this exciting and dynamic four day event. Speakers and guests included Tim Peake, Dara Ó Briain and Professor Alice Roberts giving presentations in theatres themed around the topics Brain & Body, Cosmos, Earth and Technology.

Approached by Ops Squad, OneBigStar were requested to design and quote a solution for all AV across this inaugural edition of New Scientist Live at Excel, London. The brief was to design four theatres each catering for 400 seated on the main show floor themed as; Brain & Body, Cosmos, Earth and Technology as well as the ‘Main Stage’ in the upstairs Platinum Suite for a further 1200 seated.
As the show floor plan was laid out in zones, OBS designed each of the theatres using an identical layout and technology deployed but with similar colour theming as the show itself to aid identification. Each comprised of a simple stage set capable of hosting lone presenters or a panel with a tension fabric graphic backdrop, full height BWS draping to create the 20m x 20m area and up-lit white voile. Due to the open nature of the theatres along the main show floor wall and therefore ambient light levels OBS decided to deploy their Absen A3 LED screens to each area, these provided a high level of light output along with great depth of colour bringing the presentations to life. Presenters used our playback devices and laptops switched through the new Roland V1-HD mixers coupled with full sound re-enforcement through a full Electro-Voice PA system. OBS designed each area to have a flown PA from truss bars rather than ground stacked enabling the speakers to be directed down into the corresponding zone thus limiting the amount of audio traveling to adjacent theatres. Allen & Heath QU16 consoles were used for mixing and Sennheiser radio microphones as hand held, lapel and headset options. ETC Source Four Zooms were used as key light for each stage area and the graphics along with Studio Due ArchiBar 150’s to uplight the white voile behind the set.
The Platinum Suite being the ‘Main Stage’ had to cater for many different acts including single presenters, panel sessions and touring theatre shows. OBS designed a set sympathetic to both the venue/room architecture and the show branding bearing in mind the large capacity and varied content. The stage set was mainly white with a large stage and 3no. Absen flown LED screens, all independently switchable for content / IMAG. The PA was flown EV XLE compact line array to give maximum coverage and sound re-enforcement for the shows and video playback. The lighting package in this theatre required more feature rich equipment and therefore included Robe moving fixtures, LEDWash 600’s and MMX Spots along with key light from ETC Source Four’s and Showline PL1 Profiles all controlled by a GrandMA 2 Lite console.
